Roderick James, Architect works with his wife, Amanda Markham, Designer, (TV producer, interior decorator, Last Word Lectures executive team hosting renowned speakers from all over the world, Parchment Shade Company Ltd 1982-1986) designing, developing and building special projects both in the UK and abroad.
Roderick James was the Founding Director and Architect for the Centre for Alternative Technology at Machynlleth in Wales from 1974-1980, it is now a university for sustainable architecture, Public demonstration centre for windpower, hydropower, solar heating, solar electricity pv, organic agriculture, sustainable solutions with 80,000 visitors per annum. www.cat.org.uk;
A member of the Intermediate Technology Development Group (1975- 1979), now called ‘Practical Action’ developing third world technologies, brick making, fibre reinforced cement, Cinva Ram.
Trustee of the Society for Environmental Improvement (1980-1986)
A member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Boat and Shoreworks committee (10 years)
Founding chairman of Carpenter Oak & Woodland Ltd and Carpenter Oak Ltd (Oak frame buildings, Windsor Castle, Stirling Castle, 1500 Houses, 60 carpenters at peak) 1986-2006.
Founding chairman of Adventure Capital Ltd (classic yacht and barge restoration and charter 2002-2008).
Founder and director of the SchoolHouse Project (video here) 2016, a programme for Schoolchildren building a house in their school grounds.
Founding chairman and director of R-Affordable Homes Ltd, a training programme for ex-offenders building a house in Scotland (2017)
